Through out her life, French-born Francoise Gilot has combined artistic talent with academic achievement. A respected artist in her own right met Picasso when she was 21 and he was 61.
She lived with him for 7 yrs and had two children with him, Paloma and Claude. Francoise left Picasso in 1953. During that time she also worked with Henri Matisse, developing a strong friendship with the elderly painter. In 1970 she married Dr. Jonas Salk, the medical scientist;
and polio vaccine pioneer.
Francoise Gilot, a highly regarded international artist of the second half of the twentieth century, has exhibited her work for more than fifty years in the major art centers of Europe and North America. She remains a vital presence in the art world. In addition to her extensive and creative work as print-maker, Gilot’s oeuvre also includes over 1500 oils and more than 5000 works on paper.
Her work, which is available through the Kubiak Gallery, is from a local private collection. The owners collection of Franciose work is also emotional based. Franciose and her daughter, Aurelia (father Luc Simon, French painter) spent time with the collectors when ever she was in the area.
